Draw a Pencil Icon Using Adobe Illustrator
Today's tutorial is different, we will only use Illustrator in this tutorial. If you are familiar with Photoshop, it would seem difficult because it is not as friendly as Photoshop. But keep the spirit, I'm also not very good at Illustrator. Let's learn together.
In this tutorial, we will draw a pencil icon using Adobe Illustrator. By following this tutorial, you will learn the technique of reflection with clipping masks and how to do skew transformation.
As always, before starting this tutorial let's preview the image we will produce.
Open up Illustrator, create new file (File > New) with size 1024x768 px.
Activate poligon tool. Click on the canvas and enter the settings: 6 to produce a hexagon shape. Create shape as shown below. Also, change its color to orange.
Below the hexagon, create a rectangle using the rectangle tool. Set the color to yellow.
Click the bottom center rectangle with pen tool to add new points. With the white arrow tool, selection that new point and move it down.
Activate the move tool. While holding alt drag shape to the left to duplicate it. With the shear tool change the shape, see image below for reference.
As before, make the right side. Change the color of this square to a square-light yellow and dark yellow.
Activate the ellipse tool, and draw a black ellipse at the top of the pencil.
With the pen tool, draw a triangle below. This will be the tip of the pencil. Change the color to a gradient shown below.
Now on top of this triangle make another smaller triangle. Lower its opacity to 62%..
Click on Effects> Blur> Gaussian Blur. Give a radius of 5.4 pixels and click OK. Now this will form the highlight and strengthen the impression of 3D.
Blur process will make the highlights's size bigger. We need to set the highlight remains on the tip of a pencil by giving it clipping mask. Activate the triangle tip layer and press ctrl + C to copy. Activate the highlighted triangle and press ctrl + F to save a copy to the front triangle results. Select both and click Object > Clipping Mask > Make (ctrl +7).
Of course, do not forget the carbon in the tip of a pencil. Create the form shown below with the pen tool. Copy the triangular tip of a pencil again (ctrl + C) and keep it on top of earlier objects. Select both and press ctrl +7.
Draw little white triangle at the tip of a pencil and lower its opacity to 35%.
At the top, create some rectangles. Set the color to lighter and darker color, just like the color of the pencil.
Select all objects in the pencil and press ctrl + G. Everything is now already in one group. Seleksi pensil lalu putar posisinya. Selecti the pencil and turn the position.

Duplicate pencil with ctrl + C then ctrl + F. Rotate it until like the one below. We will create a reflection of a pencil on the floor.
We need to hide some reflection of this pencil. Create a rectangle covering the reflection of a pencil. Fill with a gradation from white to black.
Select reflection pencil and box covering it.
On the menu bar transparency box and select Make Opacity Mask.
For the shadows, duplicate pencil and save it on the floor. From Color panel change its color to black.

Click Effects > Blur > Gaussian Blur.
Create a box with a gradation from white to black shadow over the pencil. Select both and press ctrl +7.
Here's the result, partly the shadow disappeared.
Finally, as a sweetener create the box at the bottom and fill it with a radial gradient from gray to white. I hope you liked this tutorial and learn a thing or two from her technique. I am also still learning Illustrator. If you have Illustrator tips, help me to write it in the comments section.
