In this tutorial, we’ll learn how to easily create text that made of another text easily using Photoshop. We’re not just learning about typhography here, we’ll combine it with photo manipulation. See the image we’ll create below.
Materials Needed
- Gas Mask Model from falln-stocks
- A very popular Grunge Texture from Princes-of-Shadows
Step 1: Create Background and Add Model
Take gas mask model. Draw path around him using pen tool.
Hit ctrl+Enter to turn path into selection.
Step 2
Copy gas mask model and paste him to a new 1280×800 px canvas. Hit ctrl+T, right click and choose Flip Horizontal.
Step 3
Paste grunge texture behind the gas mask model.
Step 4
Create new layer above grunge texture. Hit D, ctrl+Delete to fill it with white.
Click Filter|Render|Lighting Effects. Use setting below. This step will add light source on the scene.
Step 5
Change layer opacity to 60%.
Step 6
Alt+click ikon New Layer. This will show you a New Layer dialog box. Check Use Previous Layer, blending mode Overlay, and Fill with. Hit OK.
Step 7
Using tool burn paint areas inticated by arrows below to make it darker. Do the same with dodge to lighten other areas.
Step 8
While holding ctrl click gas mask layer. You’ll have new selection based on layers content.
Step 9
With marquee tool move selection away from the light source.
Step 10
Crea new layer. Fill it with black. Hit Filter|Blur|Gaussian Blur. As you can see this is going to be a shadow on the wall.
Step 11
Change layers opacity to 40%. This will soften the shadow even more.
Step 12: Creating Text
Click all eye icons in front the layers. We’ll hide every background and model to focus more on the text.
Create text using tool type. As you can see, every word is in separate layer. Their size is also vary. I make the word FIGHT larger to emphasize it and do the opposite for AFRAID. Once you’re done creating your text, select all those text layers and hit ctrl+G to put it in a group. One more thing, no need to worry about its color, use any color you want.
Step 13
Next, we need to create lots of text. Click and drag to create a text box. You can just use random text like lorem ipsum but I prefer to use real text so our viewer can really read it. Because this picture reminds me of war, I go to wikipedia and open article on world war and copy some text written there. Then I paste it a few times in Photoshop. I also use alignment justify to make sure the text fit perfectly inside text box. Use very small size font like 5 or 6.
Step 14
Change its opacity to 25%.
Step 15
Hold ctrl then click all the big words we’ve created earlier. You’ll soon have selection shaped like them.
Step 16
Duplicate smaller text by dragging it to new layer icon. Change its opacity back to 100%. Hit Add Layer Mask icon.
Step 17
Click on eye layer in front of text group. The big bold text is gone but we can see the text written there.
Step 18
Create new layer above the smaller text. With lasso tool create selection around W. Fill this selection with any color you like.
Step 19
Click Layer|Create Clipping Mask. This will cut the color we just made and put inside our text. Looks cool isn’t it?
Step 20
Repeat step 18 and 19 to the other characters. Here’s what i have now.
Conclusion
Finally the text is done and we just need to reactivate the other hidden layer by clicking on their eye icon. Hope you enjoy this tutorial as much as i do.
